Shakeshwar Farmer Producer Company Limited is based out of House No. 84 in Vanjarwadi. It's a quiet spot in the Nandgaon taluka. Nashik is famous for its crops, but being a small farmer here has its own set of challenges. We decided to form this company so we could buy things like fertilizer in bulk and hopefully save a bit of money. It’s a practical thing, really. We spend most of our time out in the fields, so the office at the house is usually only busy in the evenings or early mornings. We grow a lot of maize and onions, depending on what the weather looks like. Sometimes the rain is too much, and other times it’s not enough, so we’re always checking the sky. It’s just a group of local guys who’ve known each other forever. We don’t have a marketing team or anything like that. We just write things down in our ledgers and try to make sure everyone gets their fair share. Dealing with the transport to the market is probably the biggest chore we have. The trucks don’t always show up when they say they will. But we manage somehow. It’s just part of the life we chose here. We’re honest about what we do and we don’t try to make it sound better than it is. It’s just hard work and hoping for a good price at the end of the season.
