Sanjay Steel Center

Sanjay Steel Center is a bit different from the grocery shops on the Main Road here in Deolali. We deal with heavy things like steel pots, pans, buckets, and all sorts of kitchen utensils. Being in the Camp area of Nashik, we get a lot of army families who are moving into the quarters and need to set up their new homes. The shop always smells a bit like metal and the floor is hard concrete to handle the weight. It can be quite noisy when we are moving the stock around or when a customer is checking the sound of a new milk can. My father started this business and I’ve been helping him since I was a teenager. We don't do any big marketing or have a fancy showroom. Everything is just stacked on the shelves or on the floor. If a piece has a small scratch, we show it to the customer honestly and give them a little discount. We don't like to hide things. The traffic outside can be heavy with army trucks and buses, so we have to speak up to be heard. I spend my quiet hours polishing the display sets so they stay shiny for the people walking by. It is a lot of lifting and hard work, but we like being a part of the Deolali community. We just use a simple ledger to keep our accounts.
