Panas Farmers Producer Company Limited

Out here at the farm house in Umrale Bk, the air is always a bit dusty and smells like the earth. We are right in the middle of the Taldindori area of Nashik, which most people know for the big harvests. Panas Farmers Producer Company Limited is not based in some tall building; we just work out of the main room of the farm house. There are usually muddy boots by the door and the kitchen table is covered in maps of the different plots in the village. It is a practical place. We spend a lot of our time checking the weather and worrying about the grapes or the onions, depending on the month. The road up to the house is a bit bumpy and if it rains too much, it gets hard for the bigger trucks to get through. We started this because we realized that doing things alone in Umrale was just getting too difficult. Now we try to coordinate the trucks and the pickers from here. It is a lot of shouting across the yard and trying to get the scales to work right. We don’t have any fancy software to track things, just a couple of thick notebooks that we try not to spill tea on. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from before the sun is up until late at night when the insects start buzzing around the porch light. We just take things one day at a time.
