Matoshri Shakuntala Deore Farmer Producer Company Limited is based out of Nandgaon, right near the J.T.K. Highschool. It’s a familiar spot for most of us in this part of Nashik. We started this because the local farmers needed a way to organize better. Dealing with the markets in the city can be a headache, so we figured we would do it as a group. The office is a simple place, nothing special to look at. We mostly spend our time talking about the weather and the price of onions or whatever else is growing in the fields. It’s hard work and the hours are long, especially when the harvest is ready and everything needs to move at once. We don’t use a lot of big words or complicated plans. We just look at what needs doing today and we do it. Sometimes the rains are late and we have to adjust, other times we have a bumper crop and have to scramble to find storage. That is the life of a farmer in Maharashtra. Being near the school makes it easy for people to find us. We are just a group of neighbors trying to make the farm business work a little more smoothly for everyone involved. It’s about the soil and the crops and getting through the year without too many problems. We keep things honest and just work our land together.
