Zaveri Bazar is never quiet, and our shop at 66 Sheikh Memon Street is right in the middle of all that chaos. If you look for Hotel Bhagat Tarachand, you are basically right at our doorstep. The smell of the food from the hotel always drifts over, especially in the afternoons when everyone is hungry. Our space is quite narrow and packed with things, like most shops in this part of Mumbai. We’ve got stacks of items for weddings and celebrations tucked into every corner and shelf. It gets very crowded when a whole family comes in at once, but we manage. The street outside is so busy with handcarts and people that it’s hard to hear yourself think sometimes. We’ve been in this spot for a long time, and we know most of the other shopkeepers on the block. The stairs up to our area are a bit steep and old, so you have to watch your step. We don't have fancy displays or anything like that; we just have what people need for their big day. Most of our time is spent unfolding things and showing them to customers, then folding them all back up again. It is a lot of work, and the fans never seem to be enough during the humid months. But this is the heart of the market, and we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves in a quiet place. We just keep at it every day.
