You can find Vishal Auto Parts at Mazgaon 4th Road, number 9. It’s a busy spot with cars and bikes constantly pulling up outside. Inside, it’s rows and rows of metal shelves. We have everything from tiny nuts and bolts to heavy engine parts that take two people to lift. The smell of oil and rubber is pretty strong here. I usually have grease under my fingernails that never seems to come out completely. We spend a lot of time looking through thick catalogs to find the right part number for some old vehicle someone is trying to fix. It can be frustrating when the part we need is buried at the back of the bottom shelf. The floor is stained from years of people bringing in leaky parts to show us what they need. We have a small counter where we write out receipts by hand. There is an old calendar on the wall from three years ago that nobody ever took down. We get a lot of regulars, mostly mechanics from nearby garages who come in for a quick chat and a spare part. It gets loud when the traffic picks up on 4th Road, so we have to shout a bit to be heard. It’s a gritty job, but someone has to keep all these machines running. We just keep our heads down and handle whatever comes through the door each morning. It is honest work for people who know their cars.
