We are located way up on the 12th floor of the Ashutosh Apartment building on Nepean Sea Road. It’s a famous area of Mumbai, right near August Kranti Marg, so there is always something happening outside. But up here, it’s mostly just us and the sound of the air conditioner. We handle a lot of jewellery pieces, mostly working with diamonds as the name suggests. The apartment is set up with work tables and a lot of cabinets for storage. It’s not a shop where you walk in off the street to browse. We mostly work with people we’ve known for years. The sunlight comes in quite strong in the afternoons, so we have to pull the blinds to see what we are doing. It’s a bit of a routine—get in, check the messages, look over the pieces, and see what needs finishing. Sometimes the traffic on Laxmibai Jagmohandas Marg is so bad we just stay late and wait for it to clear. We don't spend money on big ads or anything. We just focus on the items on our desk. It’s a small operation, really. Just a few people who know their way around a gemstone. We eat lunch at our desks most days, usually something brought from home in a tiffin. It’s a decent way to spend the day in this part of the city, even if the pace of the trade is a bit tiring.
