Umesh Store

Umesh Store is right there in Borivali East, serving the local families who live in the surrounding buildings. It’s a typical neighborhood shop where the shelves are packed with everything from soap to pulses. There isn’t much room to walk around once a few people come inside at the same time. I spend most of my day standing behind the wooden counter, weighing out items or reaching for jars on the top shelves. We don't have those fancy scanners or self-checkout machines. Everything is done by hand, and I keep a running tab for some of the regulars in a thick register. The morning is the busiest time when people are rushing to get milk and bread before work. After that, it gets a bit quieter, and I can catch up on restocking the shelves. The floor is old stone that has seen a lot of footsteps over the years. We don't do any advertising; people just know we are here because we’ve been open for years. Sometimes the delivery guys bring the wrong crates and we have to spend an hour sorting out the mess on the sidewalk. It is a simple life, and I know most of my customers by their first names or at least by what they usually buy. The shop doesn't have air conditioning, just a single fan that wobbles a bit, but it’s enough for us to keep going throughout the long summer afternoons.
