Down in Umella, specifically in the Hanuman Ali area of Vasai, you’ll find the Thakur Polytechnic. It’s a bit out of the way compared to the main city of Thane, which actually gives it a bit more space. The surroundings are a mix of old houses and some open ground. Our building is a solid structure that has been through many rainy seasons in this part of the district. We have workshops where students can get their hands dirty and actually learn how to use tools and machinery. It’s not about sitting in a chair all day; it’s about the practical side of technical work. The halls can get quite loud when the machines are running, and there’s always a bit of grease or dust around, but that’s how a polytechnic should be. We have a small staff who mostly live in Vasai or Taluka, so we’re a local bunch. We don’t have a fancy website or a PR team. We just open the gates in the morning and wait for the students to arrive from the nearby villages and towns. During the monsoon, the road to Hanuman Ali can get a bit muddy, but everyone still shows up. We just want to make sure the people who come here leave with some real skills they can use to find a job. It’s basic, hard work, and we’re fine with that. We just take it one semester at a time.
