Our shop is Gala No 4 in the New India Market. It’s right on the 24th Main Road in Andheri East, not far from the Lj Iyengar Bakery. You can usually smell the bread in the mornings when we open up. We have a lot of fabric rolls and rolls of decorative stuff piled up. It’s a bit cramped inside because there’s so much stock. We spend a lot of time measuring out cloth and cutting it for customers. The market gets busy, especially on weekends when everyone is out shopping. We’ve seen the neighborhood change over the years. We just focus on what’s in front of us. If a customer wants a specific pattern, we go through the stacks until we find it. Sometimes it takes a bit of digging. My hands are usually full of thread and lint. We keep a ledger for everything we sell. It’s a simple business. We aren't doing anything complicated, just providing material for homes and offices. The light in the shop isn't great, but we know where everything is. We stay open late most days to make sure the orders are ready. It’s just how we do things here. If you pass the bakery and see a bunch of colorful rolls, that is probably us. We’re just regular people working in the market. Every roll of fabric has a place in our shop.
