Tata Memorial Hospital

Tata Memorial Hospital on Doctor Ernest Borges Marg is a landmark in Parel that most people know well. It’s a massive place, and even after working here for a long time, I still sometimes take a wrong turn in the back hallways. The street outside is always a mess of taxis and people trying to get somewhere in a hurry. We spend our days dealing with a lot of noise and a lot of questions. It’s a very old building in parts, with high ceilings and heavy doors that creak when you open them. We don't have the newest furniture or fancy decorations on the walls. Mostly, it’s just white paint and notice boards covered in old papers. It can feel a bit overwhelming when the morning rush starts and the lobby fills up. We just try to keep things moving as best as we can. Every day is a bit of a struggle against the sheer volume of people who need something. We don't use a lot of fancy words to describe what we do. We just open the gates in the morning and stay until the work is finished. It’s a gritty, busy place that feels very much like the heart of Parel. There are better-looking buildings in Mumbai, for sure, but this one has a lot of history in its walls. We’re just the ones currently looking after it and the people who come here through those doors every single day.
