We’ve been here at 412/C 57/59 Poona Street for a good while now. Sterling Chambers is one of those old buildings where you always know your neighbors. It’s busy from the moment the sun comes up. Most days, the office is a bit of a mess with log sheets and delivery notes scattered across the desks. We don’t have fancy furniture or a big reception area, just some chairs and a lot of phone lines that never seem to stop ringing. People come in and out all day, mostly talking about routes and timing. It’s the kind of place where you can hear the street noise all the time, which keeps us awake. Surface Roadways India Pvt Ltd started small, and we still feel that way even though the work has grown. Dealing with roads in India is never simple. There is always a bridge closed or a delay somewhere that we have to figure out on the fly. It takes a lot of patience to do this. We drink a lot of tea while staring at maps or calling drivers to see where they’ve reached. Some of the guys here have been working together for over ten years, so we’re more like a family than anything else. We just try to get the work done and head home when the job is finally over for the day. It’s a lot of long hours, but that is just the way the transport business goes.
