Over at Chembur 15, things stay pretty steady for us at Shubham Telcom. It isn't a huge place, just a small shop where we handle mobile recharges and sell a few handsets to anyone who needs one. Most of the people who come in live right around the corner or in the next building over. We know their names and what kind of monthly plan they usually need for their families. Sometimes the internet goes slow and we have to tell people to wait a bit while we reset the router, which is annoying but that's just how it is. We have a glass counter that’s seen better days and has a few scratches, but it holds the phones just fine. It’s mostly just talk and work here. We don’t have a big sign or anything flashy to get attention. You just look for the shop near the main crossing and that’s us. I’ve been working here since I was a lot younger, and not much has changed in the way we talk to people. We don't use those scripts like they do in the big city stores. If a phone is junk, we'll probably tell you it’s junk. There’s no point in lying to your neighbors. Sometimes the rain gets in a little bit under the door when it’s monsoon season, so we keep the cardboard boxes high up on the top shelves. It’s a decent life, being part of the Chembur community and seeing the same faces every day.
