Being tucked away on Dontad Street in Masjid Bunder means we're always in the middle of a crowd. If you know this area at all, you know the narrow lanes and the constant shouting of loaders and cart pullers outside the window. Semco Engineering is right at number 62. It’s an old building, and the stairs are a bit steep and narrow, but it’s home for us. We spend our days surrounded by blueprints and metal parts. It isn't a quiet job, that’s for sure. There’s always someone coming in to ask about a specific part or a drawing we’re working on. We try to keep things neat, but in an engineering office, there’s always a stray tool or a stack of papers that won't stay put no matter what. We don’t bother with big slogans or trying to look bigger than we are. We’re just a group of people who understand how things are put together and how they work. Sometimes we stay late when a project is giving us trouble, drinking way too much chai from the stall across the street to stay awake. The neighborhood is alive from early morning until late at night, and we’ve become part of that rhythm. It’s a lot of hard work and sometimes we get frustrated when a design doesn't click right away. But we just keep at it until it’s finally done. We aren't trying to change the world, just trying to make sure the stuff we build actually works like it's supposed to for the people who buy it.
