Our place is up on the first floor of the Matru Ashish Building on Nepean Sea Road. It is right above the Bombay Dyeing shop, so it is pretty easy to spot from the street if you are looking for the sign. Being on the first floor means you have to walk up the stairs, but it gives us a bit of a break from the direct dust and noise of the cars below. Nepean Sea Road is one of those parts of Mumbai that feels a bit more relaxed than the city center. We have both the school and the salon running in this space, so there is always a lot of activity going on. You will often see students practicing their techniques or staff members moving between the different rooms with supplies. It can get a bit crowded when everyone is in at the same time, but we managed to find a rhythm that works for the day. We keep the floors swept and the equipment in its place, though things can get a bit hectic when a big class is happening in the back. The building itself has been around for quite some time, and you can feel that in the layout of the rooms. We don't have a lot of fancy furniture, just the chairs and tables that are necessary for teaching and for doing hair work. Most of our days are spent on our feet, going from one station to the next until it is time to go home.
