Sarvodaya Hospital

Being right opposite the railway station in Ghatkopar West means this hospital never really sleeps. LBS Marg is always loud, with horns honking and people rushing to catch their trains. Inside here, it’s a bit of a different world, though it’s just as hectic in its own way. We have stretchers moving through the halls and people sitting on the benches waiting for news. The building has been here for a while, so the walls have some scuffs and the floor tiles are worn down in the spots where everyone walks. We deal with all kinds of stuff here since the station is so close. Sometimes it’s a minor thing, other times it’s much more serious. The staff is usually running around, trying to keep up with the admissions and the discharges. We have a small canteen area where the tea is always hot, which helps during the long night shifts. It isn't a quiet, peaceful place by any means. It’s a working hospital in a very crowded part of Mumbai. You’ll see families huddled together in the corridors talking quietly. We try to keep the queues moving at the reception, but on Mondays, it’s almost impossible. We just do what needs to be done each shift. It’s about getting people in, seen to, and hopefully back home across those tracks as soon as they are well enough. It’s a tough job but it's what we do here daily.
