Our office is Shop No 231 in the Adarsh Industrial estate in Andheri East. We are located right beside the big cigarettes factory, which is a landmark everyone in this area knows. It’s a very industrial setting with a lot of warehouses and small factories all around us. The air usually smells a bit like tobacco from next door and there is a lot of heavy machinery noise during the day. Inside the shop, we have our desks and filing cabinets where we handle maritime documents and shipping schedules. It is a functional space without any unnecessary frills. We spend our time talking to people at the docks or coordinating with transport companies. There are always people moving through the industrial estate, so it never really feels lonely. We keep a few spare chairs for visitors, but mostly it is just us working through our lists and making sure the containers are where they should be. The floor is concrete and the walls are plain, which suits the kind of work we do. It’s often quite busy with people dropping off papers or asking about port clearances. We’ve been part of this industrial community for some time and we like the grit of it. It’s a place where people come to work hard and get things moving across the sea. We usually lock up and head home once the factory next door shifts gears for the evening.
