Rathod Potteries

Rathod Potteries is located right on Highway Lane in Ghatkopar East. You can find us pretty easily if you look for the Samta Building nearby. Our place is usually covered in a thin layer of dust from the clay, which is just part of the job. We’ve been working with our hands here for quite some time, making things out of earth and fire. It’s not the cleanest work, and my fingernails are usually dirty, but there is something good about making things that people actually use in their homes. The heat from the kilns can get pretty intense, especially during the summer months when Ghatkopar is already boiling. We have a small crew and we all know our roles, from mixing the mud to packing the finished pieces so they don't break. It’s a bit of a crowded space because we have to store the raw materials and the finished stock in the same area. Sometimes things break during the firing process, which is always a bit of a disappointment, but you just start over and try again. We aren’t some big factory with machines doing everything; we still do a lot of it the old way. People from the neighborhood stop by to see what’s new or just to say hello. It’s a simple life, focused on the wheel and the clay. We just keep at it, day after day, trying to make things that last.
