Nirmals Boutique

We are located on Bajaj Road in the Khar area. It’s a nice enough street with quite a bit of shade from the old trees. Nirmals Boutique is where I spend most of my waking hours. It’s not a huge place at all. Just a main room with some big mirrors and a few racks of clothes. I usually have different pieces of fabric draped over the chairs while I work. People from the nearby apartment buildings walk in while they are out for their evening stroll. We talk about the weather or maybe the new cafe that just opened up down the road. It’s a very local neighborhood thing. I do all the measurements myself with a yellow tape. My glasses always seem to slip down my nose when I’m looking at the numbers. The sewing machine is kept in the small back room. It’s an old metal one but it honestly works better than the newer plastic ones. I have a girl who helps me out with the fine handwork. She’s been working with me for about three years now. We usually listen to the radio while we get things done. Sometimes the rain in Mumbai gets so heavy that we have to put sandbags at the front door to stay dry. Bajaj Road gets some big puddles during the monsoon. But usually, it’s just a quiet and steady spot. I don't use any computers or fancy machines for my work.
