If you ever come down to Andheri Kurla Road, you know how loud and crowded it gets. We are tucked away in Kapadia Industrial Estate No. 3. It’s a big complex with a lot of different businesses, but we are in units 303 and 204. Our place, Nav Bharat Motor Manufacturing Company, is usually filled with the smell of grease and the sound of metal. We work on motors here. It’s heavy work and our hands are rarely clean by the end of the shift. Chakala is always buzzing, and being in Andheri East means there’s never a dull moment. We’ve got old lathes and newer machines too, and we spend most of our time trying to make sure every motor that leaves here is solid. There is a lot of dust from the road outside, so we are always dusting off the benches. Lunch is usually something quick from one of the stalls nearby because there’s always a deadline to meet. We don’t have any fancy reception area or shiny floors. It’s a workshop, plain and simple. We’ve been at this for years, and the guys here know their way around an engine better than they know their own homes. It’s just us doing what we know how to do, day in and day out, in this busy corner of Mumbai. The weather gets hot inside the shed, but we just keep the big fans running and get on with the next batch of motors.
