Meerah Jewels

Meerah Jewels is tucked away at 48 Goregaon East on Jumma Masjid Road. It is a bit of a trek up to the 3rd floor of the Old Poor House Road building where we work. Sometimes the lift is out of order, so we just take the stairs and get our exercise for the day. The space is filled with small boxes and tiny tools used for the jewelry. We spend most of our time sitting at these old wooden benches that have seen better years. It is not a fancy showroom with velvet curtains or anything like that. Usually, the radio plays softly in the background while we handle various stones and metal pieces. People find us because they know this area near the masjid well. It gets quite noisy outside with the traffic and people shouting, but inside it is mostly just the sound of us working. The walls could probably use a new coat of paint, but we are usually too busy with the daily tasks to get around to it. Sometimes a customer comes in and sits for an hour just talking about what they want. We do not mind the company. It is just how things go here. We keep everything organized in these little labeled drawers that only I can really navigate. It is a small team, just a few of us doing the actual work and making sure things get finished. We usually grab lunch from the small stall downstairs. It is practical work that keeps us busy.
