Nagdevi Cross Lane is always crowded. If you’ve ever been here, you know what I’m talking about. Our shop, number three in Kamani House, is right in the middle of it all. It’s a narrow lane, and sometimes it’s hard to even walk through with all the goods being moved around on handcarts. We have been here at number 76 for a long time. The shop isn't very large, but we manage to fit everything we need inside. Most mornings start with opening the shutters and clearing the dust from the night before. There’s a lot of shouting and noise from the neighbors, which is just how Nagdevi is. We do our trading quietly. People come in looking for specific things, and we try to find it for them in the stacks. It’s a lot of old-fashioned work. We don't use many fancy systems, just a lot of ledgers and knowing where everything is kept. The tea guy comes by twice a day, and that’s when we take a small break. It’s a bit cramped, especially when we get a big delivery, but we make it work. We’ve known the other shopkeepers for decades. It feels more like a community than just a place of business. We aren't doing anything revolutionary, just selling what people need and going home at the end of the day.
