Kalamkari Design Studio

Our studio is on the third floor of the Raja Bahadur Mansion. It’s right on Mumbai Samachar Marg in Fort. The building is one of those old ones with the high ceilings and the creaky wooden floors. It’s a bit of a climb if the lift is slow. We do our design work here. There are drawing tables everywhere and lots of fabric samples. It’s not very organized, but we know where everything is. The light from the windows is good in the afternoon. We spend a lot of time arguing over colors and patterns. Fort is a great area, always busy with lawyers and office workers. You can hear the sounds of the street even up on the third floor. We’ve been in this mansion for quite a while now. The walls are thick, so it stays somewhat cool. We have a small pantry where we make tea. Most of the day is spent hunched over sketches. It’s a creative mess most of the time. We don't have a receptionist or anything. If someone knocks, one of us just gets up and opens the door. It’s a relaxed place to work. We just enjoy making things. The address at 22 Mumbai Samachar Marg is easy to find. It's a solid old place that suits us perfectly well. We just like the vibe of the old city and the history of this building.
