Hans Battery Corporation

Hans Battery Corporation is located at Mahim 16. It is not the kind of place you come to for window shopping. The shop is filled with heavy black batteries stacked on top of each other. There is usually a bit of grease on the floor and the smell of acid and lead is quite strong. We spend most of our time testing cells and charging up units for people whose cars or inverters have died. It’s heavy work, and our hands are almost always dirty by noon. Mahim is a humid place, so we keep the big shutters open to let the air move through. There are some old wooden chairs in the corner for anyone waiting while we check their battery levels. We don't have a computer system for everything; a lot of it is written down in big ledgers with blue ink. Hans has been doing this for years, and he knows which battery goes into which machine just by looking at it. The walls used to be white, but now they are mostly a dull grey from all the years of work. Sometimes the rain leaks in a little near the back door, but we just put a bucket there. It’s a straightforward business. We show up, handle the heavy lifting, and make sure the batteries are working right. People come to us because we are right here in Mahim at number 16.
