Princess Street is a crazy place to have a business, but we’ve been here at Chikhal House for a long time. Our address is 160 Shamaldas Gandhi Marg, but everyone around here just knows the building. It’s one of those classic old Mumbai structures where the hallways are narrow and there’s always someone hauling a heavy sack past your door. We deal with industrial supplies and chemicals, so our space is usually packed with samples and containers. There’s barely enough room for the desks sometimes. Working here means you’re right in the heart of the wholesale market, which is great for business but exhausting for the feet. We don’t have an HR department or fancy lunchrooms. We usually just eat at our desks or grab something quick from the street vendors outside. The noise from the traffic and the shouting of the coolies is just background noise to us now. It’s a family-run kind of vibe, where we know our customers by name and their fathers’ names too. We don’t spend much time on fancy decorations or marketing plans. We just focus on keeping the stock moving and making sure our clients get what they asked for. It’s a busy, cramped, and loud way to spend the day, but we wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves in a quiet, modern office building. We have been here for decades and don't plan on moving anywhere else soon.
