Gupta Engineering

Gupta Engineering is located right in the middle of Dharavi. If you’ve been through the area, you know how busy and cramped it can get, but that's where the work happens. We have been doing engineering jobs here for a long time. It’s a noisy place with the sound of machines and metal all day. We don't have a lot of space, so we have to be very organized with our tools. Most of our day is spent fixing parts or fabricating things that people bring in. It's dusty and loud, but we like the work. There's always something different to weld or cut. We aren't a big corporation with a shiny lobby. It’s just a workshop where we wear greasy clothes and get our hands dirty. Sometimes the power goes out or the rain makes things difficult, but we just keep going. People in Dharavi know us because we’ve been here through everything. We don't do fancy advertising. Word travels fast around here if you do a decent job. My father started things and now we just continue the trade. We focus on the metalwork and making sure the dimensions are right. It’s not a glamorous life, but it’s honest work. Every morning we open up the shutters and get started. The tea stall nearby is where we take our breaks. It is a simple life centered around the machines and the neighborhood. We just want to make sure the work is solid before it leaves our shop.
