Empire Chemicals is located at 414, Senapati Bapat Marg in Lower Parel. This part of Mumbai used to be all textile mills, but now it’s a mix of everything. Our office is in one of those buildings that feels like it has a lot of history. The walls are thick and the windows are small. Outside, the traffic on Senapati Bapat Marg never really stops, so there is a constant hum of engines and horns. We deal with various chemical products, and our office is usually full of samples and brochures. It’s a bit of a squeeze sometimes because we have so many records and files piled up. We don’t have any of those modern open-plan layouts; it’s more like a maze of small rooms and corridors. The walk from the station can be quite sweaty during the monsoon or the peak of summer. Most of us eat lunch at our desks while we try to catch up on the paperwork. There is a small shop downstairs that sells really good snacks, which is where we get most of our afternoon food. The staff here is small but we’ve worked together for a long time. It’s a very straightforward business. We buy and sell chemicals and try to make sure the logistics don’t fall apart. It’s just a normal, slightly cramped Mumbai office where everyone works hard and goes home tired.
