Rajan House is an old building in Prabmadevi, and being on the third floor means we are right in the thick of things. The stairs are a bit narrow and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but it suits us just fine. We spend most of our time dealing with machinery parts and technical drawings that get spread out over every available surface. It is not a quiet office because there is always the sound of traffic from the street below and the hum of the air conditioners trying to keep up with the Mumbai humidity. We have a small pantry where the kettle is always on, and that is usually where the best conversations happen. People think engineering is all about fancy computers, but a lot of what we do here is just figuring out how to fix things that have gone wrong on a site somewhere far away. The desks are cluttered with bolts, metal samples, and old notebooks. We do not have a fancy reception area, so if you walk in, you are likely to just see someone hunched over a desk. Lunch is usually brought from home in tiffins, and we eat together while talking about the news or the cricket scores. It is a practical way to spend the day. We have been in this spot for a while and we know the neighborhood like the back of our hand. It is just a regular place where we get the job done.
