Deepa Engineering Works

The name Peace Cottage is a bit funny because Deepa Engineering Works is anything but quiet. We are located in Jogeshwari East on 17th Main, right across from the Municipal School. When the bell rings and the kids come out, the whole street gets blocked. Our workshop is filled with the sound of grinding and welding most of the day. We have been in this spot for years. The walls are stained with oil and grease, which is just part of the job. We fix things and make parts for bigger machines. It’s heavy work and our hands are rarely clean. The school across the street gives us a sense of time; we know when it’s lunch and when it’s time to pack up. Sometimes the teachers come over to ask us to fix a broken chair or a gate. We don't have a website or a fancy logo. Most people just see the sign outside and walk in with a broken piece of metal. It gets incredibly hot near the machines, especially in May. We have a small bench outside where we take breaks. Jogeshwari is a crowded place, and our little corner is no different. We just focus on the task at hand, whether it is a small repair or a bigger fabrication job. It’s steady work and we have a few regulars who have been coming to us since the beginning. We just keep the machines running.
