Metro Umbrella Industries

We are up on the 2nd Floor of 26/28 Mahadev Shankar Seth Lane, right on Shrikant Palekar Road in Chira Bazar. Metro Umbrella Industries is a bit of a climb if you aren't used to the stairs. The building is old, and the hallways are narrow. We spend our days surrounded by fabric, ribs, and handles. During the monsoon season, this place is absolutely chaotic. There are umbrellas everywhere, drying or waiting to be packed. In the summer, it’s a bit quieter, and we spend time preparing for the rain. It’s a family-run kind of thing, very old school. We don't use much fancy equipment. A lot of it is done by hand. The light coming through the windows isn't great, so we have lots of overhead bulbs. Chira Bazar is a very crowded part of Mumbai, so getting deliveries in and out can be a real headache. We’ve lived and worked in this area for ages. We know all the short cuts through the lanes. We aren't trying to be a global brand. We just want to make umbrellas that don't break the first time the wind blows. It’s a messy, busy business, but it’s ours. If you come by Metro Umbrella Industries, just follow the sound of the sewing machines up the stairs. Sometimes we have to move boxes just to sit down for lunch, but that's just life in a small workshop.
