Bharat Umbrella Mfg. Co.

We have been here on Babu Genu Road for a long time now. People around Kalbadevi know the shop because it gets very busy during the monsoon months when everyone needs an umbrella that actually stays open when the wind picks up. We started Bharat Umbrella Mfg. Co. because we wanted to make something that lasts. You see a lot of cheap ones on the street that break after two days, but that's not how we do things here. The workshop is small but we keep it organized. My father used to say that a good umbrella is like a quiet friend in the rain. We mostly handle the frames and the stitching right here in the back. It is dusty and noisy sometimes with the machines going, but it feels like home to us. If you walk down the road past the cloth market, you will see us. We do not have a big fancy sign or anything. Just the work. Some days we are just fixing handles or replacing the fabric for regular customers who have had their umbrellas for ten years or more. It is hard work on the hands because the fabric gets tough to pull. But when it rains in Mumbai, you really see why it matters. We stay open late when the clouds look dark. It is just how it is in this part of town. Everyone is rushing, but we are just here making sure the ribs of the umbrellas are straight.
