B. N. Jewellers

Our place is on the first floor at 130 Kalbadevi Road. It is right across from the Cotton Exchange, so there is always something going on outside on the street. You have to walk up the stairs which are a bit narrow and old, but once you get inside, it’s a lot quieter than the main road. We’ve been at this location for a while now. My uncle used to run it, and now we just keep it going as a family. The room isn't huge, but it fits our desks and the heavy safes where we keep the jewelry. Sometimes the ceiling fan makes a bit of clicking noise, especially in the afternoons when it gets really hot. We mostly deal with people who have known our family for a long time. They come up the stairs, have some cold water, and we show them what we have in the drawers. It’s a lot of manual work, checking pieces under the lamp and writing things down in the paper registers. We don’t use computers for everything because the old way works fine for us. Sometimes the traffic on Kalbadevi Road is so bad that even we get late to our own shop in the morning. But that is just how Mumbai is. We don't have a big fancy showroom with bright lights everywhere. It’s just a plain office space where we do our business. We try to keep things organized but sometimes the papers pile up.
