Our company, Pilavakkal Collective Farming Farmer Producer Company Limited, is located at 1/12, Guru Bhavanam North Street in Ilanthaikulam. It’s a quiet part of town, and we’ve been here for a while now. The company is basically a collection of farmers from the area who wanted to work together instead of competing or struggling alone. Guru Bhavanam North Street is where we have our main room for meetings and paperwork. It’s not a fancy office with air conditioning or anything like that. It’s just a place with a few wooden desks and some files where we track what’s being grown and what’s being sold. We talk a lot about the weather and the irrigation from the Pilavakkal area because that’s what matters most to our livelihoods. Some days are slow and we just sit around and talk about the news, but other days it’s hectic with everyone trying to get things sorted at once. We don't use big words or have a complicated way of doing things. We just look at what needs to be done on the farm and we try to do it as a group. It’s a very practical way of living for us. We all know each other well, so the atmosphere is usually pretty relaxed even when there is a lot of work. We’re just regular folks from Ilanthaikulam trying to keep our farming traditions going while managing the business side as best as we can. It’s not always perfect, but we make it work somehow.
