Traditional Small Millets And Herbal Producer Company Limited is way out in Puliyanoor Village, near Singarapettai in the Uthangari area of Krishnagiri. Being out here means we’re surrounded by the actual land we work on. Our office at number 410 is just a simple building where we store seeds and keep our records. We focus on millets and herbs because that’s what grows well in this soil and it’s what people have been planting here for a long time. It’s a slow kind of work compared to the city. We spend a lot of time waiting on the rain and then working like crazy when it’s time to harvest. Processing the millets is a bit of a chore; it takes a lot of steps to get them ready. We don't have any fancy marketing people. Most of us are just locals who grew up in the village. We talk about the weather more than anything else because that’s what matters for the crops. Sometimes the herbs don't dry right or the millet yield isn't what we hoped, but we just try again. It’s a very grounded existence. We aren't trying to change the world; we’re just trying to keep these traditional plants going and make a living while we’re at it. It’s quiet out here, but there is always something that needs to be done with the plants or the paperwork.
