Umiya Timber

You can find Umiya Timber at number 3 in the Furniture Industrial Area. As soon as you get close to our place, you can smell the cut wood and see the piles of logs and planks stacked up. This whole area is dedicated to furniture and woodwork, so there is always the sound of saws running and hammers hitting nails nearby. We spend our days moving heavy pieces of timber around and cutting them to the sizes that people need. It’s a messy job with sawdust getting into everything, including our tea and our clothes. We don't have any fancy displays; what you see is just raw wood ready for work. Most of our visitors are local carpenters or people looking to build something for their homes. We talk a lot about wood grain and knots and which types of timber are currently available in the yard. The sun beats down on the open yard in the afternoon, so we try to get the heavy lifting done early. We have a small office tucked in the corner where we keep the ledger, but mostly we are outside on the floor. It’s a straightforward business and we don't try to make it seem like anything else. We just provide the wood that helps other people build their chairs and tables. It’s a solid way to spend the day, working with our hands in the industrial area and seeing the raw materials go out to become something useful.
