Our place is down on Beach Road, right near P.B No 75. Being so close to the coast means there is always a bit of salt in the air, which we have to watch out for with the equipment. Western India Cashew Company Pvt Ltd has been running out of this building for years. The cashew business is a lot more manual than people think. We have groups of people sitting and sorting through the nuts, looking for any that don’t look right. It’s quiet work mostly, except for the humming of the dryers. In the monsoon, the rain hits the roof so loud we can barely hear ourselves talk, so we just get on with it. We handle everything from the raw shells coming in to the final bags going out. The trucks come and go all day, and sometimes the sand from the road gets everywhere. Our office is just a plain room with old files stacked up. We keep a kettle in the back for tea breaks. It’s a simple setup. We don't have a big sign out front, just the address and the gate. Most of the people working here live nearby and walk or bike in. It’s a lot of repetitive work, cracking and peeling, but it’s what we do. The sea breeze is nice in the evenings when we are locking up for the night.
