The General Engineering Works

Our place, The General Engineering Works, is located at 101/A, S. N. Banerjee Road. Being in Taltala means there is a lot of activity outside our doors all day long. The workshop itself is quite old and the walls have turned a bit dark from all the grease and metal work over the years. We have a few lathes and some heavy drilling machines that take up most of the floor space. It’s not the cleanest place because of the iron filings and oil, but it’s a working shop. I took over from my father and we’ve kept the same routine since then. We don’t use any of those new computerized machines. Everything we do is by hand or with the older equipment that still runs fine if you treat it right. People bring us parts that are broken or need a bit of welding, and we see what we can do. Sometimes it gets really hot in here during the summer months and the smell of hot metal is quite strong. We don’t have any fancy office or a place to sit, really. Just a wooden desk where I keep the logbook and some old receipts. It’s a noisy spot with the sound of the machines and the traffic outside, but it’s where we’ve always been. We just keep our heads down and get the work done as it comes in from the local factories and mechanics.
