You can find our office at 22 West Street in Modernpark, which is part of the Santoshpur area in Kolkata. It’s a typical South Kolkata neighborhood with narrow streets and lots of houses close together. We work on building projects, so our days are mostly about plans, site visits, and dealing with all the little details that come up when you’re constructing something. The office is small and filled with papers, blueprints, and usually a few umbrellas near the door because of the Kolkata rain. We aren’t some huge firm with a glass skyscraper of our own; we just work out of this space in Santoshpur. A lot of the people who work here grew up in this part of the city, so we know the local geography and how to get things done around here. It’s a lot of coordination between the workers on the sites and the suppliers. Sometimes things go smoothly and sometimes there are delays with materials or the weather, but that is just part of the job. We don’t use any fancy management software or have big board meetings. We just sit around the table, figure out what needs to happen next, and then go do it. It’s a very hands-on way of working. Most of our time is spent making sure the current project is moving along as it should be without any major hiccups.
