Down in Behala, specifically at Sarat Pally, you can find Sarkar Jute Craft. We are near Kamini Villa, which is a good landmark if you are lost. Our workshop is on South Behala Road. It is a quiet street compared to the main parts of Kolkata. We have a lot of jute stored here. It has a very specific smell that stays on your clothes. The floor is almost always covered in fibers and small scraps. We don't mind the mess because it means we are busy. We use some old machines that make a lot of noise, but they are reliable. There isn't a lot of space for fancy furniture, so we just have what we need. It is mostly manual work, so our hands are always busy. We don't have a big sign out front, just a small one. Most people find us through word of mouth. We like it that way. It keeps things simple. During the monsoon, the rain on the roof is so loud we can't hear the radio. We just keep working through it. We aren't trying to be some massive factory. We are just a local group making things out of jute. It is honest work and it keeps us occupied. We have been in Sarat Pally for a long time and the neighbors are all friendly. We just take each day as it comes and try to stay productive. It is a simple life for us here.
