SACHISH BUILDCON LLP operates from the first floor of an old building at 5, Chittaranjan Avenue. If you have ever been to this part of Kolkata, you know how crowded and loud the streets are. There is always a lot of honking and people rushing by outside our window. We chose this spot because it is central and easy to get to by metro. The office itself is pretty simple. We have some old wooden chairs and big tables where we spread out our drawings. Our work mostly revolves around the technical side of building things. We talk to engineers and suppliers all day long. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a bit, but we just wait it out and drink some tea from the stall downstairs. The walls are a bit dusty and the paint is peeling in some corners, but it feels like home to us. We don't spend money on fancy decorations. It is more about getting the numbers right and making sure the sites have what they need. Being on the first floor helps because we can see the street activity. It is a very traditional way of doing business in this city. We handle the paperwork, take calls, and manage the logistics from this single room. It gets stuffy in the monsoon, but we have a couple of fans running constantly to keep the air moving.
