Being on the 1st floor at 7, Sambhu Mullick Lane puts us right in the heart of the old trading district of Kolkata. NSSE FAB PRIVATE LIMITED is surrounded by other fabric shops and wholesalers, so the air is always thick with the smell of cloth and the sound of porters carrying heavy loads. Our space is small and a bit cramped, but it works for us. We spend a lot of time checking samples and talking to suppliers who walk in from the lane. It’s a very old-school way of doing things. We don't use much fancy software; mostly it’s just ledgers and handwritten notes. The stairs up to the office are steep, and we always tell visitors to watch their step. It gets really busy during the festival seasons, and we barely have time to breathe, let alone clean up the scraps of fabric on the floor. We aren't corporate people. We wear comfortable clothes and talk loudly over the noise of the street. Sometimes the monsoon rain leaks a little near the window, and we just put a bucket there. It’s just the way it is in this part of town. We’ve been here long enough that the other shopkeepers are like family. We just keep doing our thing, day after day, in this little corner of West Bengal.
