9 Lal Bazar Street is where you’ll find Metro Exporters Ltd. It’s an older part of town with a whole lot of history trapped in the walls. Our office has those high ceilings and big windows that let in a lot of dust and noise from the busy street below. We’ve been here for many years now, and the furniture is really starting to show its age, but it’s comfortable enough for us. Exporting things involves a lot of waiting around and then suddenly a lot of frantic activity. One minute it’s completely quiet, and the next, everyone is shouting over each other to get a container loaded before the deadline. We deal with all sorts of different goods, and you never quite know what the next week is going to bring. The tea lady comes by twice a day, and that’s usually the only time we take a real breather. We aren't one of those polished, modern firms you see in the business magazines. Our walls are covered in old calendars and maps that are probably slightly out of date. The stairs up to the office are a bit steep and creaky, which I guess keeps us fit. We spend a lot of time talking to people down at the port and trying to navigate the rules that seem to change every single month. It’s a bit of a grind, but there’s a real satisfaction in seeing a shipment finally leave the city.
