J. D. Machineries

Our shop is right on the ground floor at 135 Canning Street. If you know this area, you know how crowded and loud it gets. There are people selling everything under the sun nearby. We deal in machinery, so our place is full of metal parts and heavy equipment. There is usually a bit of oil on the floor and the smell of grease in the air. We don't wear suits here. It’s mostly work shirts and trousers that we don't mind getting dirty. People come in looking for specific parts or wanting to see how a machine works. We spend a lot of time explaining the nuts and bolts of things. The building is old and has a lot of character. We have high ceilings but it still feels cramped because of all the stock we keep. The ground floor location is good because we don't have to carry the heavy stuff up any stairs. We have an old desk where we keep the ledger and the phone. It rings quite a bit. Sometimes we have to shout over the noise from the street to be heard. We’ve been on Canning Street for a long time and we know most of the other shop owners around us. It’s a gritty, hard-working part of the city. We just provide the machines that people need to get their own jobs done. There is always something to fix or move.
