Ritche Road is a nice enough place to be based in Kolkata. We are at number 4, right in the heart of the 19 district. It’s an older part of the city, so the buildings have that lived-in feel. Our office isn’t anything out of the ordinary. It’s just where we spend our eight or nine hours every day. We know the street vendors outside and the people who live in the apartments nearby. The morning starts with opening the shutters and getting the systems running. Most of our day is spent talking to people who come in to deposit money or ask about their balances. It’s a lot of repetitive work, but we don’t mind it. It’s steady. We don’t use any of those big words you hear in commercials. We just explain things simply to whoever is standing at the counter. The tea here is pretty good, and there’s always someone coming in with a bit of gossip from the neighborhood. We are just a small team at this Icici Bank Ltd location. We handle the documents, fix the occasional error, and try to keep the line moving. It’s a practical, no-nonsense environment. No one is putting on an act. We’re just local people working at a bank, making sure everything is in its right place by the end of the shift.
