Our spot is right on Strand Road, specifically inside the Customs House Agents Hall at 15/1. It’s a busy place, as you can imagine, being so close to where all the trade happens. Every morning we open up and get straight into the logs and the various papers that pile up. It’s not a quiet office by any means. You can hear the sounds of the street and the constant movement of people coming in and out of the hall. We have been part of this community for a while, just another one of the traders trying to keep things moving. There’s a lot of back and forth with the customs work, and sometimes things get a bit hectic when there’s a deadline or a ship coming in. We don’t have any fancy decorations or marketing stuff on the walls. It’s mostly just calendars, notebooks, and a few old chairs for when someone stops by to talk shop. The air is often thick with the smell of the river and the city. We know most of the people working in the nearby stalls and offices, so there’s a bit of a friendly atmosphere despite the hard work. We just keep our heads down and focus on whatever shipment needs clearing or whatever form needs a stamp. It’s honest work and we’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the docks and the busy Kolkata streets.
