G. A. Randerian Ltd. has its home in the Gulabi Block of Commerce House, right at 2 Ganesh Chandra Avenue. This is one of those old-fashioned business buildings that has a lot of character, even if the walls are a bit stained and the elevators are slow. Working here feels a bit like stepping back in time. The ceilings are high, and the hallways are wide, though they’re often cluttered with boxes and old furniture from the different offices. We’ve been here for a long time, and we’re quite comfortable in our space. There’s a lot of history in these rooms. Most of our day is spent dealing with the administrative side of things, lots of ledgers and heavy folders that we’ve kept over the decades. The street outside is one of the busiest in the city, so there’s a constant hum of horns and shouting coming up from the pavement. We usually have our lunch at our desks while we look over the day’s tasks. It’s a very traditional way of doing business. We don't have any of those open-plan offices you see in the magazines. Everyone has their own little corner where they’ve worked for years. We know the security guards and the other tenants in the building quite well. It’s a community of people who are just trying to keep their businesses running in a fast-changing city. We’re just happy to be a small part of that old Kolkata business world.
