Our workshop is over at 172 Ramesh Dutta Street. When you walk inside, the first thing you notice is the sound of the sewing machines. We’ve got rows of them, and there’s always a hum of activity throughout the day. We make bags and different types of clothing right here on the premises. There are stacks of fabric in every corner—jute, cotton, and canvas. We spend a lot of time cutting patterns and checking the stitching on every piece. Ramesh Dutta Street is a typical Kolkata street, and we fit right into the neighborhood. Our team is made up of local people who have learned the trade over time. It’s not a sterile factory environment. It’s a place where people talk while they work, and there’s usually some music or a radio playing in the background. We have large cutting tables where we lay out the material. Sometimes the floor is covered in scrap fabric and thread, but we clear it up at the end of the shift. We don't have a big corporate structure. We just focus on the orders we have for the week and try to get them finished properly. It’s a lot of manual work, sitting at the machines and guiding the fabric through. We take our tea breaks together, and then it’s back to the needles. It’s a practical, busy place where we make things by hand.
