Goldluck Export Pvt. Ltd. operates from Puratan Bazar in Diamond Harbour, which is in the south 24 Parganas district. The market is always loud and crowded with all sorts of people. We deal with export stuff from our office here. It’s not a very big place. The office has big windows but the view is just of the market rooftops and some old trees. It’s humid most of the year being so close to the water. We handle a lot of different goods and the paperwork that goes with them. The staff here has been together for years and we all know each other well. We know the neighbors. We know when the fish market starts up because of the smell and the noise. If there's a problem, we just talk it out over tea. The floor is concrete and stays cool even when it’s ninety degrees outside. We spend hours talking to customs agents and trying to figure out why a shipment is stuck. It’s not glamorous work. Sometimes we’re here late because a truck broke down or the paperwork was wrong. We have a couple of computers that are a bit slow, but they get the job done eventually. Most of the day is spent checking ledgers and answering the phone. We don't do big ads. We just keep the business running from this spot. It’s a decent life and we’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the bazar and the river.
