Daily Needs

My shop, Daily Needs, is over in Prafulla Kanan West, specifically at Aa 12. This part of Krishnapur in Kolkata is quite residential, so most of my customers are just people living nearby. The shop is close to the City Party Office, which is a good landmark if someone is asking for directions. I spend most of my day sitting behind the counter. It is a small space, so I have to be careful about where I stack the crates of cold drinks and the bags of rice. Some mornings it is quiet, and I just read the newspaper or tidy up the shelves. Then in the evening, it gets much busier when everyone comes home from work. They want bread, milk, or maybe some biscuits. The floor is just plain concrete and it gets dirty pretty fast with people coming in and out, so I have to sweep it a few times. I do not have any fancy signs or lights. It is just a basic place to get your daily items. Sometimes the electricity goes out and I have to use a handheld fan to stay cool while I wait for the lights to come back on. That is just part of living and working in this part of town. I know most of the kids who come in to buy toffees after school. It is a decent way to earn a living and stay connected to the Prafulla Kanan neighborhood.
