The office for the Consulate General is located at A 2A Vidya Sagar Sarani in Kolkata. We are in West Bengal, postcode 700 063. It’s an old part of the city with a lot of history in the streets. Working here is different from a normal business because we deal with official papers and people coming in for visas or other help. The building is quite formal, but inside it’s just us doing our daily tasks. There are always people waiting in the lobby, and the phones never seem to stop ringing. Kolkata is a very busy city, and Vidya Sagar Sarani can get quite crowded with people and yellow taxis. We have a lot of rules to follow because it's a government office, so things take time. We aren't here to sell anything. We just process applications and help out with various diplomatic things. The fans hum all day long to keep the air moving. Some of us have been working here for decades, and we’ve seen the city change a lot outside our windows. We try to be helpful, even when the paperwork gets frustrating. It’s a lot of stamps and signatures and checking IDs. It’s not the kind of place where you’ll find catchy slogans. We just do the administrative work that needs to happen for things to run smoothly between countries. I think it is important to be patient when you visit an office like this one.
